Neck masses are abnormal growths in the neck area and can be caused by a variety of reasons. These masses usually occur due to the enlargement of lymph nodes, glands or other tissues. Proper evaluation and treatment of the masses is important in understanding the underlying cause.
Causes:
Lymph Nodes: One of the most common reasons. Lymph nodes can become enlarged in conditions such as infection, inflammation or cancer.
Thyroid Gland Problems: Enlargement of nodules or cysts in the thyroid gland can cause a mass in the neck.
Salival Gland Problems: Inflammation or tumors in the salivary glands can be felt as a mass in the neck.
Inflammatory Diseases: Some inflammatory diseases such as sarcoidosis can also cause masses in the neck.
Cancer: Cancers, especially in the head and neck region, can cause masses in the lymph nodes or other tissues.
Symptoms:
A noticeable mass or swelling in the neck
Difficulty swallowing or breathing
Pain or tenderness
Redness or warmth around the mass
Rapid changes in the size of the mass
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Physical Examination: The doctor performs a physical exam to assess the mass.
Imaging Tests: Tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI can help determine the size and structure of the mass.
Biopsy: A tissue sample may be taken to understand the nature of the mass.
Treatment: Treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause. Antibiotics may be needed for infections, and medical or surgical intervention may be needed for thyroid problems.
