Ear None and Throat (Otorinolaryngology)
Tonsils and adenoids are lymphoid tissues that function as part of the upper respiratory tract defense system. Both structures protect against infections, but in some cases they can become inflamed or enlarged.
Tonsils:
Tonsils are lymphoid tissues located on either side of the throat and are important for the immune system. There are two types of tonsils: palatine tonsils (on the sides of the throat) and lingual tonsils (behind the tongue).
Tonsil Problems:
Tonsillitis: Inflammation of the tonsils, usually caused by bacterial or viral infections. Symptoms include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and headache.
Tonsil Enlargement: Especially in children, tonsils can become enlarged, which can cause sleep apnea, constant sore throat, and difficulty swallowing.
Adenoids:
Adenoids are a group of lymphoid tissues located behind the nose and in the upper part of the throat. Adenoids provide protection against infections, but when they grow, they can lead to various health problems.
Adenoid Problems:
Adenoid Enlargement: Enlargement of the adenoids can cause problems such as nasal congestion, mouth breathing, snoring and sleep apnea.
Adenoid Inflammation: When the adenoids become inflamed, they usually develop as a result of upper respiratory tract infections such as colds or flu. In this case, symptoms such as nasal congestion and sore throat are observed.
In cases of severe tonsil enlargement or adenoid problems, surgical procedures such as tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) or adenoidectomy (removal of the adenoids) may usually be recommended.
Healing Process:
The recovery process after surgery usually takes a few weeks and there may be symptoms such as pain and difficulty swallowing. Following your surgeon's recommendations will speed up your recovery.
